Why PSG Are Focusing On Parisian Players to Defend Their European Title

Homegrown players were once a somewhat uncommon sight on PSG team sheets.

Until recent seasons, the team's QSI era was spearheaded by high-profile signings from elsewhere.

The Change in Strategy

Several PSG's most notable youth graduates during that period, such as Kingsley Coman and Mike Maignan, departed the club before breaking through in the first team.

The club's focus on local players in current campaigns has already seen the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Desire Doue drive last year's historic campaign.

Building From Within

Currently, PSG are looking to go one further and build around their local prospects, a shift that has been catalyzed by an early-season injury crisis.

Due to Dembele, Doue and Achraf Hakimi among the injured players, there have been as many as five homegrown players - all from the local region - in the starting lineup this season.

State-of-the-Art Academy Complex

The club's comprehensive football campus has been essential to this approach.

Previously, PSG moved out of the old training ground to the nearby modern PSG Campus.

The new facilities, which were formally opened a recently, host the men's and women's teams along with their academy teams over a expansive area.

These include numerous football grounds, housing for 140 young players, schooling infrastructure and even a vegetable garden.

Long-term Planning

Speaking at an ceremony to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the development program's inception, technical director Luis Campos explained that the team's future strategy were to incorporate "more and more players from the French capital" in the first team.

"The philosophy is to have prospects in all youth categories who can climb the steps the hierarchy," states Campos.

A more defined route from the youth system to the senior squad can also reduce the organization's need on the transfer market, the sporting advisor emphasized.

For Campos, "frequent shopping regularly doesn't create you a more skilled culinary artist."

"The key factor is to be going in the right direction, not to stockpile players," he continues.

Youth Development

The ex-Ligue 1 executive also described a session between Luis Enrique and the academy staff, in which the Spaniard set out his "tactical approach" rather than prescribing particular drills or formations to follow.

The Spanish coach's appointment two seasons ago, Campos explains, was particularly supported by "willingness to play young talents as soon as they mature."

Rising Stars

Facing Barcelona in October, it was Senny Mayulu, who featured prominently and found the net in PSG's surprising 2-1 victory.

Warren Zaire-Emery, Quentin Ndjantou and Ibrahim Mbaye were also featured in the win over the Spanish side, while 17-year-old Mathis Jangeal was on the bench, having first appeared for the first team a few days beforehand.

Mayulu, who scored the decisive goal in the Champions League final victory over Inter in May, has been among the early success stories of the revised strategy.

Multi-position Player

The 19-year-old engine room operator, naturally a central operator, particularly attributes his significant playing time to his versatility.

Having started in every league game since the late summer, Mayulu has been positioned throughout the team, from right-back, to middle of the park, to striker position.

Youth Development Direction

Yohan Cabaye has been the overseer of the club's academy since 2024, having originally joined the development system following the conclusion of his professional career.

The experienced professional speaks particularly highly of Mayulu, highlighting the way he bounced back from injury multiple occasions in his development phase.

"When he initially joined the youth system, he was unable to get through full seasons," Cabaye says. "He demonstrated such resilience that he always came back, though."

Exceptional Talent

Zaire-Emery, as the ex-Premier League player puts it, is an exception.

"He cannot serve as an benchmark, or else you'd have multiple young players approaching Luis Enrique's office," he says.

Presently experiencing his fourth campaign in the senior squad, the 19-year-old talent has been captaining the affected Parisians from an increasingly familiar defensive position.

Return to Form

Following difficulties through stretches of last season, the French international is finding again the explosive form that initially secured his place in the professional setup.

Following his recall to the French senior side in the past few weeks, the local product clarified his stint with the youth international setup assisted in regaining his self-belief.

"I've focused on myself, I persisted and worked hard," he stated before the game with Bayer Leverkusen.

PSG have reaped the rewards, with Zaire-Emery acting as the primary representative another time for the emerging local talents of Parisians.

Rival Interest

A essential component of making the most of the local player resources is resisting approaches by other clubs.

With a team of professional talent spotters observing youth football in the Paris region, PSG are seeking to strengthen their presence on the fertile ground for players at their doorstep, from which their domestic and European rivals have historically signed players.

Youth Success

When development league outcomes are any indication, PSG will not be short of players to integrate in the years to come.

The development squad won the competition again this previous year and have performed well in the European competitions, which has naturally drawn scouting attention.

"Regularly present between 30 and 40 scouts from domestic and international clubs visiting our youth games," Cabaye notes.</
