Although not quite at the equivalent scale as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava executed the holiday gesture at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with inescapable allusions to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the commencement of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating 6 or 7 apples per day,” she went on. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, donated by a first responder, was christened after the modern linguistic fad of young people yelling “six-seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
This particular pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to open the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: joyful, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Each year, we are proud to celebrate heritage and mercy in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
