England have opted for a twelve-player squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner securing a unexpected place.
Bashir's inclusion suggests that the tourists will wait until the morning of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium pitch suit a pace-heavy attack or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers round out the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if Bashir makes the final team.
The England coach had been expected to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
During these matches, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin bowling.
Among these spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side relying on seamers remains the more likely choice.
There had been rumors that Will Jacks could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred slow bowler for the series.
Earlier, Nathan Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon said of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so they come out and perform well out here.”
