The Contents of that Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

For much of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a moment that could contain the secret to his downfall for good.

Heads Up: This discussion details significant events for the second part of the final season.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a Henry as a boy come across an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

Like many elements in volume 2, the truth about the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Secret Science

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, a young Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their parallel research. This spy in the tunnel is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is known about his research, the container almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the case could have held strange particles that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the whispers of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how utterly horrifying the event was for him. While he commands the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a key upper hand in the ultimate battle that awaits.
