In “It’s a Deal”, a flashback discloses that popular character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the realm beyond in advance to secure a strong position there. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, promised Alastor he would become “the most powerful Sinner in Hell” in exchange for his soul.

This prompts the question: In what way is Rosie powerful enough to raise Alastor over all other Demonic Sinners?

“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the initial building block in a larger narrative that encompasses so much, moving into season 3,” the creator explains. “Obviously that is an excellent question: How is she that powerful? The solution could be many things, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”

It is uncertain the duration viewers will have to wait for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit seasons 3 and 4, but the creator often notes that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she says withholding on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s focus where it belongs.

“The challenge of any agreement with demons, or narratives that have enigmas, is giving people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then unveiling that gradually, and letting that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I'm very excited.”

Mysteries Resolved in Season 3

The showrunner assures that the upcoming season will tackle the queries fans have been posing, like why Rosie commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which diminished his power in the infernal realm.

“The entire seven-year span, and the pacts these individuals are doing, and all that — it contributes to a larger story,” she reveals.

In the meantime, the origin story episode provides another glimpse into how the main characters of Sinner Demons appeared as as humans, following after seeing Sir Pentious’ historical human form in the second episode. The creator explains that a lot of thought was put into these character designs.

“The human versions of these personas hold great significance,” she says. “They range from looking quite distinct from their demon form to looking very similar. With Pentious, the first one we see, there was a little bit of a debate within the team between choosing a design that symbolizes the character, versus going with something that's historically correct. We opted for creating something that just felt like it was him.”

She mentions the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair of that style in Victorian-era London.’ But at the same time, we believe the silhouette is so important, and we also just thought he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We kind of gave the excuse that he's a hermit, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the human versions of these personas […] it's such a fun thing to investigate and figure out. I am looking forward for fans to see more of what the human forms look like.”

Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel season 2 are released on midweek on the streaming service.
