A renowned South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country grappling with persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.
Authorities reported the forty-year-old entertainer was confronted by three suspects, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.
The purpose of the attack is unknown and no suspects have been apprehended have been made, according to authorities.
Law enforcement indicated that Stock was attacked as he was exiting a building in the vicinity of the Carlton Centre.
He had devoted time at the property overseeing the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, according to reports.
"Authorities believe the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report stated.
Security camera video reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a security uniform opening fire on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but fell down on the opposite side of the road.
Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the attack.
Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the location.
Police have appealed eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.
"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the attack, and investigators have been tracking them to establish their destination," remarked an authority figure.
His sister, a close relative, expressed the family was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
"I am devastated. I don't have words," were her words.
"It is clear he was a champion for numerous individuals. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were willing to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She appealed to the community to refrain from sharing disturbing footage from the scene, noting this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's children.
Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that was broadcast on a South African TV network.
In addition to his role as a presenter, Stock was involved in various entrepreneurial pursuits, including security provision, offering VIP protection services and securing major functions across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in real estate operations and was involved in property reclaimations.
His death has caused national trauma and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the government and various organizations.
A cabinet official commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He was forthright fearlessly and impartially. He even challenged me and my decisions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we ought to be," the minister added.
A party figurehead commented the "brazen murder of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
A media executive said that "DJ Warras was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a dedicated enthusiast of music and a warm soul who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His artistic passion left an indefinable mark."
In a release, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, approachability and intelligent commentary, adding that his memory "will live on".
