Nuno Espírito Santo Makes Creating the Hammers Identity His Number One Focus

The new West Ham manager is convinced it will be a gradual process to build a clear philosophy at West Ham United. Having previously managed Forest, who is settling in to his new position, aims to connect with the organization’s traditions on an emotional level.

Absorbing the Team Identity

Hired after the sudden exit of the previous manager, Nuno explained that experienced club employees have been filling him in about life at West Ham. When asked about his view of the famous “West Ham way”, he smiled and admitted that it carries various meanings—for some it’s as attacking play, while others value passion and resilience.

“It’s exactly what I’m trying to understand day by day,” Nuno commented. “It goes beyond understanding—we have to feel it. It takes time to absorb it. After it’s internalized, we must embed it within.”

He stressed that feeling is what counts, rather than mental comprehension. Regarding playing identity, Nuno admitted they are not yet close from realizing it. “Merely talking about the ‘West Ham way’—let’s create it, let’s live it.”

Starting Period and Future Challenges

The new manager’s start kicked off with an encouraging equal result away to Everton. Questioned about the distance he is to establishing a team identity, he replied, “I think not very close. It’s difficult and requires effort from everyone at the club. But it’s a priority.”

“What shapes the way we play is not only the head coach,” he explained. “It’s the squad that determines how we play. We must find a balance between offense and defense. It’s not possible to pushing up unbalanced, since that leaves gaps for rival teams. We have to defend and organize, but always focusing on our next move after winning possession.”
