Nearly 25,000 Lost Power in South-East Queensland and Victoria Following Severe Storms

Around twenty-five thousand households in Queensland's southeast were left experiencing outages on Monday morning after powerful weather events passed over the region, generating wind gusts reaching over 100 km/h.

Large Hailstones and Broad Damage

Locals reported large ice chunks measuring up to 7cm in certain regions. Weather authorities confirmed that various areas across the state had been affected by large hailstones.

Response teams were attempting to repair power throughout the damaged zones, with nearly 70 crews deployed to manage the widespread outages.

Southern State's Storm Challenges

At the same time, nearly one thousand residents in Victoria also encountered power outages after the metropolitan area saw its most precipitation in over 500 days.

Emergency response teams handled 598 requests for assistance across the state, mainly for building damage but also for collapsed vegetation and flooding.

• Werribee - experienced substantial storm damage
• Hoppers Crossing suburb - multiple rescue reports
• Wyndham area - over 175 calls for assistance

At one point on the previous day, in excess of 28k electricity consumers in the state were experiencing outages.

Weather Forecast

Damp conditions were expected to linger along much of the state's eastern regions this week as a atmospheric system continued to pull in damp air against the shoreline.

The following day was forecast to be the wettest day, with persistent thunderstorm potential predicted across multiple regions of both regions.

Medical Alert

Health officials alerted that there was an higher risk of thunderstorm-induced asthma across the northern rural areas, particularly given the current weather patterns.

This alert comes after past events where analogous circumstances led to major medical consequences in the area.
