During a devastating turn of events, a victims killed during the Heaton Park synagogue attack is believed to have been fatally wounded by law enforcement personnel.
The chief constable from the local force announced that the Home Office pathologist has initially concluded the victim died of a gunshot wound.
“We sought guidance overnight from the Home Office pathologist ahead of detailed autopsies scheduled for later today. The expert has advised that preliminary findings show one of the deceased victims likely sustained a injury consistent with a firearm wound.”
The suspect, Jihad al-Shamie, did not have a gun, and all discharged rounds came from the police officers at the scene.
Authorities think the victim was part of the group behind the synagogue door trying to stop the attacker from entering the building.
“It follows therefore that subject to additional analysis, the wound was unfortunately incurred as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the urgently required action employed by my officers to halt this brutal assault.”
The two victims killed in the attack at Heaton Park synagogue in north Manchester on Thursday had been named as Adrian Daulby, aged 53 and Melvin Cravitz, 66 years old.
The men lost their lives when a car was used to ram into the property of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, before the attacker targeted attendees in a six-minute rampage that concluded after armed officers fired upon him, ending his life near the synagogue entrance.
Three more people sustained major injuries in the violent act on the Day of Atonement, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
Watson said, “We have also been advised that another injured person now hospitalized has also suffered a gunshot wound, which is mercifully not life threatening. It is believed the two individuals were near each other at the entrance, as attendees showed courage to stop the assailant from getting inside.”
“We extend our condolences are directed toward the affected relatives, and the wider community, touched by these events in the region and elsewhere. Trained personnel are providing support and assistance for everyone involved, including the courageous emergency teams.”
Authorities identified the attacker as the individual, thirty-five, a UK national of Syrian descent.
Greater Manchester police said that three other people – two male suspects and an older female – had been arrested “on suspicion of commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism”.
