Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as talks advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack saw over 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the single deadliest day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other international bodies.

"The violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister added on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state commemorations until October 16th - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still took place around the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the families of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was conducted in Tel Aviv. Organized by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, both sides' representatives convened in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the proposal.

A senior delegate familiar with the discussions said that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative explained the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, because of disagreements over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the deal.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to achieve any significant progress," but mentioned that facilitators are working hard to close the differences between the two sides.

Critical Issues in Negotiations

  • A lasting ceasefire
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Measures for relief supplies distribution
  • Future administration of the region

Citizen Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's public square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and many more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home any longer and until every captive are released none of us will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief anew. Then we can start to rebuild," she concluded.

Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel says 48 remain in detention in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev explained: "We must do whatever arrangement required for the abducted to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be protected."

Surveys now consistently show that approximately 70% of the population want the war to finish in as payment for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and explosions could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli attacks carried on.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side Tal al-Hawa, sector and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was killed by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Every second we look at the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this halt will not be achieved and that the fighting will come back to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern city of that area said another two victims had been transported. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the southern area, medics reported.
