Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Fears He Could Ruin the Series with the Seventh Installment.

The highly anticipated horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a massive gathering of familiar faces. This latest installment marks the iconic comeback of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters returning to the fray.

"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a daunting task that kept me up at night," Lillard reveals.

A Triumphant Comeback for Fallen Favorites

Reports have confirmed that a trio of different characters from past films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Audiences should prepare for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable officer Dewey Riley, the director and Scream 3 antagonist Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, returning to the series for the first occasion since a small appearance is a dream come true, even if he is terrified about the audience response. The actor clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.

"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I remember him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm really excited to be back."

Stu Macher has achieved cult status in the years since the 1996 movie was released, which left Lillard feeling very trepidatious.

"Truthfully, that's a part that is infamous, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now embodied in every single Scream mask that walks around every October 31st."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fandom

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about not wanting to be the one who ruins the popular series.

"The outcome is either a hit and people are excited to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this idea?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not mess up the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Speculation and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a bizarre shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by classic genre films, also is on the table.

Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
