Beloved Performer Dame Patricia Routledge, Iconic for Keeping Up Appearances, Passes Away at 96

Star Patricia Routledge, best known for portraying the character Hyacinth Bucket in the beloved TV sitcom the series Keeping Up Appearances, has passed away at the 96, according to.

Additionally, she featured in monologues by Alan Bennett and portrayed the BBC's amateur sleuth Hetty Wainthropp.

"It is with great sadness to share the loss of Dame Patricia Routledge, who died peacefully in her sleep this morning with loved ones near."

"At the remarkable age of 96, Dame Patricia's love for performing and for reaching out to fans stayed vibrant, just as modern audiences are still enjoying her roles through her beloved television roles."

The statement noted: "She leaves a void by her family and friends and by her devoted admirers worldwide."

Decades of Performance

Dame Patricia was most famous as Hyacinth Bucket - pronounced "bouquet" - a comic creation who exemplified the peak of English pretension and snobbery.

"Hyacinth is a terrible snob and I loved portraying her enormously," the performer commented.

The series Keeping Up Appearances aired from 1990 until 1995, and the following year she was chosen as the most beloved female performer at the television awards.

Beyond television, she received recognition in theater and film after launching her acting journey in the theatre in the mid-20th century.

With performances in London theater, she made a name in the America when she won the Broadway trophy for best lead actress in a musical on Broadway for Darling of the Day in 1968.

She was as adept at dramatic roles as she was at musicals and comedy - she took part in Richard III and Henry V at the RSC, then earned an theater prize for outstanding musical performance for Candide in the 1980s decade.

That decade also witnessed her emergence as a household name - landing appearances by comedian Victoria Wood in the show As Seen on TV, and writer Alan Bennett in three of his renowned Talking Heads monologues, including the 1988 piece A Lady of Letters, for which she was given a British Academy nomination.

She garnered two further Bafta nominations, for the popular sitcom, in 1992 and 93, then starred in the main character as a retired woman on a quest to solve crimes in the series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates between 1996 to 1998.

She was honored with an Order of the British Empire in 1993, a Commander of the British Empire in 2004, and damehood in recent years.
