Alphabet Commits $15bn for Constructing Artificial Intelligence Data Center in India

Computing Infrastructure
The Nation stands as a prime location for data centers due to its low data costs and quickly expanding internet user base.

The parent firm of Google Alphabet Inc. is set to invest $15bn to establish an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The infrastructure, to be established in the coastal city of the city of Visakhapatnam, will become a part of Google's international system of AI centers located in twelve different countries.

"It stands as the greatest AI facility that we are going to be investing in anywhere in the world, outside of the US," Google Cloud's chief executive announced at an conference in capital Delhi this Tuesday, adding that the financial commitment is to be distributed throughout the next half-decade.

The announcement comes at a time US President Donald Trump has been urging American companies to prioritise investments within the country.

India's Growing Role in AI Computing

India has emerged as a prime location for AI data centers. India's inexpensive data services and swiftly increasing digital audience have made it a hub for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for tech giants.

"This center will deliver our pioneering tech solutions to companies and individuals in the country, enhancing artificial intelligence advancement and promoting progress nationwide," commented Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai.

Project Details

An official contract to complete the project is set to be signed on Tuesday, local government officials announced.

"It constitutes a massive leap for the digital progression of our state, innovation, and global standing," stated the technology official Minister Nara Lokesh.

The project will merge computing and artificial intelligence facilities with green energy infrastructure and an broader fiber-optic system.

Data Infrastructure Plans

This initiative forms part of the Andhra Pradesh government's strategy to develop 6GW of data center capability by the year 2029.

Data centers are tangible infrastructures that contain the computer and network hardware that organizations use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.

They feature servers, storage systems and connectivity devices like routers and firewalls, along with the essential electricity and temperature control systems to function properly.

Investment Incentives

Across Andhra Pradesh, the government has been granting discounted land and electricity to entice international investors.

Sector Expansion

The country's computing facility market has grown rapidly over the past five years, crossing the one gigawatt capacity threshold in 2024 and approximately tripling its 2019 level.
