Administration Reveals Federal Worker Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats in response to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the official procedure for terminating staff.

While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a representative from the Treasury Department confirmed that notices had been distributed within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an pretext to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be resolved soon.

At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted Senate Democrats for not supporting the GOP proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the funding gap. Moreover, a federal judge ordered the government to disclose details on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the government to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment for the end of the previous month but not the start of October, since funding expired at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the White House have not succeeded to keep our government open and operational,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
